"George, George, wake up. It's me, Harold."
George usually disconnected his phone at night, allowing the machine to answer all calls. Last night he had forgotten and was making a mental note to always disconnect the phone. What could Harold want in the wee hours of Saturday morning? Couldn't he just wait? "What, What do you want?"
"George, Emily and I are going to get married. We're going to do it George. Isn't that great?" Harold was on top of the world.
"Harold, do you know what time it is? You have been living with this lady for a year. Haven't you two done it by this time? Besides, everyone knew this was going to happen. Harold, you are the last to know. Now go back to sleep. Why don't you guys just elope and save all of us a lot of hassle." George was such a romantic.
"George", Emily had the habit of listening on the phone quite surreptitiously. "Don't rain on the guy's day. You two play nice or I am going to have Caroline deal with you."
"Sure, Harold. That's great." George had lots of practice dealing with women. Caroline had trained him well. He knew when to just immediately give in. "What do you want me to do?" He also knew that he had just given up the better part of a month of free time, and at least a thousand dollars.
"Harold, are you two planning to reproduce? You know I am not so sure it would be a good idea. With your propensities, I mean Emily is a great woman, but it may not be enough to overcome some of your dominant genes. We could take you down to the animal shelter and have that nasty little problem taken care of." George was in particularly good form this morning.
"Thanks, George. You are too considerate. No I have already had my shots for the year. Besides, I am not sure I need tutoring from a vet in those skills." Harold got the point.
"I wasn't thinking of tutoring, Harold, but fixing a problem, that was the idea." George parried.
"You are so kind to consider the possibilities and I will mention it to Emily to see if she thinks it is a good idea. I am sure she will consult with Caroline on this matter, so I would wear some tight shorts and fast running shoes if I were you." Harold retorted.
